Arizona Baby Boomers are at a Crossroad Arizona baby boomers are making the decision to sell their family homes and moving to luxury rentals that offer a ‘hands-free’ lifestyle

  • Baby boomers are the fastest-growing group of renters, Census figures show.
  • In the US more than 5 million baby boomers are expected to rent their next home by 2020.
  • Many boomers want amenity-rich full-service communities.

A friend of mine once lived in a sizable tri-level home in Mesa, AZ, but we recently sold his large home and he downsized to a luxury two-bedroom apartment in an upscale apartment in Gilbert, AZ that offered every amenity he wanted. Now, rather than mowing a lawn, and taking care of the pool the 67-year-old former engineer spends his free time swimming in the heated pool, playing tennis and enjoying the socials at the clubhouse!

As we get older, there are only so many things you want to concentrate on. We want to focus on things that matter and get rid of stuff that takes up a lot of time, and selling your home and downsizing or moving to a luxury apartment is a good fit for some. Meanwhile, more than 5 million baby boomers across the nation are expected to rent their next home by 2020, according to a 2016 analysis from Freddie Mac.

Some boomers want to stay close to the neighborhoods they have lived in for decades; others are following their children to cities, experts said. There are a lot of Arizona baby boomers and seniors who find they want to have more flexibility.

They also want to have some sociability, whether they lost a spouse or are separated or just don’t have a family unit. They’re looking for maintenance-free living. When the toilet overflows, they want someone to take care of it.

Prices of homes are holding strong and inventories are low, so this is an excellent time to consider selling and downsizing to a smaller home, condo or renting an apartment for a more stress-free lifestyle.
